Superman – Review

Superman Review – ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

James Gunn’s Superman is exactly what the character — and the DC Universe — needed. It’s a bold, heartfelt, and nostalgic reimagining of the Man of Steel for a new generation, one that fully understands the legacy it’s inheriting and pushes it forward with confidence.

David Corenswet was born to play Clark Kent. He embodies everything Superman should represent: hope, compassion, a touch of awkward charm, and a deep love for humanity. His performance balances the quippy, relatable nature of Clark with the idealistic strength of Superman. You believe in him — not just as a superhero, but as a symbol.

The film’s world-building is impressive. Rather than dragging us through another origin story, Superman drops us into a DCU that already feels lived-in. Superheroes are known, accepted, and established, which gives the story room to breathe and explore. There’s a lot packed in — perhaps a little too much at times — but Gunn strikes a solid balance. You get a sense that this world is rich, interconnected, and ready to expand.

A standout performance comes from Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. This is, arguably, a definitive take on the character — cold, brilliant, and irredeemably evil. There are scenes where his cruelty is truly chilling, and Hoult plays him with raw intensity. You’re not meant to like him — you’re meant to despise him — and that makes him compelling.

The supporting cast also shines. Mr. Terrific is a welcome addition, Isabel Merced impresses as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is hilariously obnoxious — perfect casting. These characters don’t just cameo; they feel like part of a larger, cohesive universe.

The only real drawbacks? The CGI can sometimes veer into overly stylized or cartoonish territory, and the humor — while often on point — occasionally tips into silliness. Gunn’s trademark levity is present, and while it mostly works, a few moments might have benefitted from a lighter touch or a bit more restraint.

Still, these are small quibbles in what is otherwise a triumphant return for Superman. The film is bursting with heart, loaded with Easter eggs for DC fans, and serves as a confident foundation for what’s to come. Superman isn’t just a movie — it’s a statement: the DCU is back, and it’s filled with hope.
