Havoc – Review

Havoc – Review: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

After a long wait and a rocky development journey that began back in 2021, Havoc has finally arrived on Netflix—and it delivers a gritty, high-octane punch that’s been well worth the anticipation.

Starring Tom Hardy in the lead role, alongside veteran talents Forrest Whitaker and Timothy Olyphant, the film dives headfirst into the murky world of drug cartels, corrupt officials, and fractured power structures. Set against a backdrop of criminal warfare and political tension, Havoc follows a seasoned homicide detective who becomes entangled in a dangerous web of violence and deception after a botched drug deal sends the city into chaos.

Hardy is in familiar territory here, and it works in the film’s favour. He plays the grizzled, emotionally battered detective with a mix of vulnerability and raw intensity. It’s a character type he excels at—tough, rough around the edges, but quietly tormented. His performance brings weight to the role and grounds the film amidst the stylised mayhem.

At the helm is Gareth Evans, best known for his brutal and visually arresting work on The Raid and The Raid 2. With Havoc, Evans brings his signature touch to the Western crime thriller genre, injecting it with dynamic, bone-crunching action and immersive cinematography. The fight sequences are, as expected, a highlight—beautifully choreographed and visceral. They’re scattered throughout the film like explosive bursts that punctuate the slow-burning narrative.

That pacing may be divisive—Havoc is a slow burn for much of its runtime, gradually building tension rather than sprinting out of the gate. But for those willing to stick with it, the payoff is rich: a gripping, atmospheric ride filled with intrigue, well-executed action, and strong performances across the board.

This is more than just a mindless action flick—it’s a smart, stylish crime drama with real bite. Whether you’re a fan of Evans’ past work or simply looking for a gritty, well-made thriller to dive into, Havoc is definitely worth your time.\
