Ballerina – Review

A film from the world of John Wick: Ballerina star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as the titular character Eve Macarro, is a surprisingly strong entry into the John Wick universe. I went in with fairly low expectations, especially considering the film’s rocky production history—reshoots, director changes, and shifts in tone and genre—but I walked out genuinely impressed. In fact, I’d say this is one of the best action films I’ve seen in recent years.

The story centers around Eve Macarro, a ballerina from the Ruska Roma clan—the same group that raised a young John Wick. The action is phenomenal: fast-paced, intense, and packed with that signature kung-fu gunplay that made the original John Wick films iconic. The kills are inventive and bold—gritty, stylish, and at times even fun (if that’s the right word). This isn’t your granddad’s Nutcracker… but plenty of nuts were cracked.

Visually, the film is stunning. From candlelit interiors to moody, rain-soaked cityscapes, it has a slick, operatic style that matches the brutal elegance of its fight choreography. The soundtrack also does a great job heightening the stakes and giving each scene emotional punch.

The supporting cast is also a highlight. Norman Reedus makes a brief but memorable appearance—he’s excellent, and it makes you wonder why he isn’t in more films. Keanu Reeves shows up in a few cameos, which helps tie the film back into the larger universe and gives it a sense of continuity and world-building that fans will appreciate.

The story itself can get a little over-the-top, but it fully embraces its popcorn-action identity. It’s the kind of film you enjoy for the sheer thrill of it. Honestly, I’d love to see more of Eve Macarro in future spin-offs. There’s real franchise potential here.

Rating: ★★★½ out of 5
Verdict: A must-watch for action fans and John Wick devotees alike. Grab your popcorn and enjoy the ride.

Peace.
